Even though it is the weekend and many of our co-cruisers had booked this excursion, it was not madly crowded. The weather was pleasant, the sun shorn bright and the shrine, itself has a very calming vibe. The famous gate stood out, tall and proud in a vivid orange.

A beautiful spiritual island off the coast of Hiroshima. An easy ferry ride across and an in general nice walk around the sites. Take the train to the ferry and walk down to cross over. To fully appreciate the island and its history I recommend to hire a guide so you understand the history and culture. You can stay overnight and experience more of the culture.

Worth it for both low and high tide. Public transit is a breeze from Hiroshima to the island. 10 minute ferry with very nice views. I got to the island at the end of high tide. By the time I walked around and explored, low tide was coming in. I stayed on the beach and kept inching forward as the tide was lowering. After going through some water, I was the first time to get up and close with the shrine!

Love everything about this destination. Have been during high and low tide, and when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and it’s amazing. Local shopping super cute, deers are sassy. Definitely recommend. Each visit to Hiroshima I will always do a trip here. Can’t wait to return ✌🏼🫶🏼

The famous shrine that is very popular amongst tourists is well worth the sight. Beautiful in person with an amazing backdrop and some colourful history. Viewable from outside of the temple area but only on the edges. If you wish to view more central, there's a small admission fee payable to the temple members. Definitely try to time your visit with high tide to see it submerged. It's always busy so just be prepared.

A great day out and definitely worth the visit despite the crowds. The shrine in the water is amazing to see but the highlight for me was the Daishoin Temple. It’s about a 10minute walk past the famous O-torii Gate, far less crowded and a real hidden gem with so much to see.

Beautiful place to visit. You can access the island using the ferry (works for JR Pass and Visit Hiroshima Tourist Pass). Both high tide and low tide have their own charm. You will get better pictures (standing much closer to tori) during low tide, which is typically in the late morning around 10am to noon (in end-March). Be careful of the deer - they will do anything for food, even get aggressive.
