Can't say * liked it. When there are no events going on it's just an empty space with no purpose. Dirty, too. Maybe I wasn't at the right time
The Market Square was inserted into the city walls by the Angevins and soon became the area of the market and small artisan shops.
In the Angevin era the square was also the site of capital punishment, in fact Corradino of Swabia was beheaded here , in the place where the fountain is now located.
Furthermore, Piazza del Mercato is an important square for the Neapolitan people: it was here that the revolt of Masaniello (born Tommaso Aiello), born in one of the alleys adjacent to the square, originated.
A characteristic of the square is its irregular shape and set between four churches: the church of S. Eligio, the church of Carmine, that of Croce al Purgatorio and finally that of S. Giovanni).
It seems that the church of Sant'Eligio was the first church built by the Angevins in Naples. Of particular interest is certainly the double-dial clock located in the two-story arch.

Interesting square. Redevelopment needed for sure but it has its own charm. Not a touristy place which gives you a sense of real Napoli.
