Sri Ponnambalawaneswaram Kovil, Historic stone Hindu Temple, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Dedicated to Loard Shivaperumaan

* Built in 1857, during the British rule of the country by Ponnambalam Mudaliyar, visionary local minor lord. He built a small temple on site. So the Hindus living in Colombo would have a place of worship to call their own.

* The temple was inherited by his son, Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan who was a key figure in Ceylon’s battle for independence from the British regime. This iconic figure is one that is greatly esteemed by all Sri Lankans.

* Entirely made up of south granite stone

* The walls and the pillars have been intricately designed with peacocks, swans and cows

* The temple looks colorful during the important festival Pongal that is often celebrated in the month of January.During this festival the temple is decorated with lights and flowers and is crowded by the people all the rituals are performed with enthusiasm by the devotees and various sevas are also performed like helping the poor and needy giving food to the helpless people.

* People are not allowed to take any pictures while inside the Kovil.

* The temple is open from 5.00 am till 12.00 noon; and then reopens in the evening at 5.00 pm and closes at 8.30 pm.

One of the oldest hindu kovil in Colombo

Definitely do check this out if you are a visitor to the city. Undoubtedly an underrated masterpiece in Colombo with fine craftsmanship. The temple is fully carved by stones with fine details .Those corridors are definitely highlighted. I didn't find any difficulties in taking photographs. I was quite amazed by how calm the place was ,not crowded at all. Better to visit in the evenings.

Впервые в индуистском храме. Впечатлил каменный интерьер, сильный аромат благовоний и интересная церемония. Работает с утра и вечером, с 12:00 до 17:00 закрыт. Обувь надо снимать при входе во двор, а не в храм. Важно: учитывайте,что днём камни двора раскалены как угли. Специально обученная бабушка будет сохранять ваши тапочки, потом надо будет дать ей денежку, сколько не жалко. Мужчинам, которые пришли в шортах на входе можно взять юбку, также за пожертвование.

Place of mental peace and relaxation. A must visit Hindu Temple, carved entirely from granite, the temple is a rare gem in Sri Lanka. The stone creates a unique atmosphere, bathed in the warm glow of oil lamps. As you enter through the wooden doors, the rhythmic chanting and clanging of bells fill your senses.

Intricate carvings adorn the walls and pillars, depicting swans, peacocks, cows, and deities. A towering gopuram, decorative arches, and sculpted walls add to the grandeur. The main shrine is the heart of the temple, surrounded by others where rituals unfold at specific times.

Снаружи более интересный, чем внутри.
Можно входить, никто не запрещает.
При входе не забудьте снять обувь

とても美しく凝ったデコレーションの建物。ヒンドゥ教寺院です。気軽に中へ入る事ができます。

Однозначно рекомендую! Ми почати свою мандрівку по Шрі-Ланці з відвідування двох індуїських храмів Kathiresan (вони близько один від одного, гугл Вам в поміч). З аеропорту добралися автобусом, речі залишили на залізничному вокзалі у камері схову (вокзал дуже близько від автостанції) і пішли до храмів. Нам дуже сподобалося, це вражає, особливо тому, що раніше у таких храмах не були.

معبد هندوی بسیار زیبا و تاریخی

Significativo tempio cittadino, interessante e ben tenuto: nei pressi si può vedere anche un elefante purtroppo relegato in cattività in un misero spazio.
Da visitare l'interno con il dovuto rispetto.
