Recently, I rewatched Ronald Reagan’s farewell address on YouTube. Regardless of your political stance, his message resonates deeply. He spoke about what it means to be an American—the sacrifices made by the men and women who fought for our freedoms, our values, pride, and true patriotism that define our nation. Reagan encouraged kids to engage in meaningful dialogues with their parents around the dinner table, reminding us of many forgotten traditions in today’s America.
Today, I visited a place the Garden of Remembrance. It was long overdue. My great-uncle, who fought in World War II with the Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, was killed just days before the war ended. My father shared with me today that Uncle Teddy wasn’t recognized for his sacrifice until 1948. Like many, I can’t fully grasp the hardships my great-grandparents and ancestors faced in pursuing the American dream, losing their only son, and being seen as outcasts despite their hard work, kindness, and true American spirit.
I highly recommend visiting this garden. It’s a profound way to honor not only the soldiers memorialized but also the men and women who created this space, allowing us to remember those who paid the highest price for our freedom and so that I can proudly declare, “I am an American!”
