A location that really helps to appreciate that this city has been a world power for 17 centuries. The golden gate itself is relatively well preserved, given its age, and monumental in scale showing the grandeur of the Roman city so long ago. You can see how it was modified and repaired by later empires and then walk up to get great views over the modern metropolis. The fort in general is clearly in the middle of extensive, but delayed, repairs which removes a star. Once complete, I'd say this site should be one of the more vital to see, definitely more important than some disneyfied cistern. Getting here is pretty easy, we took a bus around the outside of the city (great chance to see some of the sea walls) and then walked along the road 10 minutes past some great bits of wall to get here. You can also get a bus direct to the entrance in the east. We then walked north to the Belgrade gate past a mixture of walls in various states of repair, again helping to appreciate the passage of time. It's a little out the way, but well worth the trip and as a bonus you can pick up some much better value baklava before heading back to the tourist area.
Sultanahmet Square, also known as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, is located next to the Blue Mosque. This historic oval-shaped site is a great spot to relax, with benches and notable attractions like the Serpent Column, Obelisk of Theodosius, and Walled Obelisk, each with informative history boards. We paused here before visiting the Blue Mosque, and it’s worth researching beforehand if you enjoy historical sites. Despite occasional crowds, most visitors move on quickly, giving you time to explore at your own pace.
Important historical place of city tour of Istanbul. If you are interested in history then it will take some time to be here otherwise it should not take more than 10 minutes to click few nice pics here. We had a local guide with us who was very helpful in understanding of historical aspects of this place.
Beautiful maintained fortress from the Ottoman period. Part of the Walls of Constantinople. Train (T6) from Yenikapi to Kalicesme. Brief walk through a neighbourhood with small narrow streets leading to on of the corner towers of the fort. It seems there is a lot of renovation / maintenance on the structure. You can walk stairs to top of south tower to enjoy a beautiful view of the Marmara sea. Well worth the effort.
The food is prepared with care. The service amazing. If you are looking for a true Istanbul experience don't look further. The owner is really a very kind man. He was like a lost friend we met again. Go and eat here. No wonder he gets 5-star reviews.
In April the entrance fee was 200 TL. Part of the fortress was under restoration. I came here early on Sunday morning when there were hardly any people in the museum. It took me 1 hour to leisurely walk around all the objects.
At the entrance I was given a folding map with the history of the fortress and I set off to explore it. I liked the view from the top and the location near The Golden Gate. The other objects aren't of much interest.
I think you should come here if you've already seen all the main attractions in Istanbul.

Very interesting sight worth a visit. You can pretty freely walk around the ruins of this historical fortress. The Golden Gate is here and you are able to climb the stone staircase to the top of the fortress where you get an elevated view of Istanbul. There are two corner towers that you can walk in: one of which was a prison. There are very few visitors and it would actually be a nice place to bring a picnic lunch due to the large grassy area and picnic tables. Currently the mosque in the middle of the fortress is under construction.
The exact location on google is wrong!!! The gate where Google takes you is locked and you need to go around the walls to find official entrance. Ask the locals! The price is 200 lira for adult and free for kids under 8. The fortress is still being renovated and you can take a walk around the towers, don't expect to see any relics or museum, as there's none. However, the fortress itself is well-kept and worth the time.
A wonderful historic area where you can find beautiful buildings, mosques landmarks and monuments.
The Sphendone remains stand out as one of the few Roman artifacts preserved in modern-day Istanbul. This remarkable landmark holds significant historical importance, situated in front of the Blue Mosque's entrance in a bustling, vibrant spot. It's truly a shame that the authorities aren't giving it the preservation it deserves.
Probably the most underrated attraction in Istanbul. If you come in the morning there are few people here, and you're one on one with the walls and towers, including the Golden Gate that have seen many victorious East Roman emperors coming through them in triumph.
You can climb up one of the Msrble towers for different views on the walls or Marmara sea. When up there you can see the place where the statue of the Great chariot dragged by elephants was standing.
The site is still under construction, but the most interesting parts of it are open. And the price of admission for foreigners is just 100 liras.

Visited the historic Hippodrome of Constantinople, an impressive site steeped in history. Originally used for horse racing and gladiatorial contests, the Hippodrome was the heart of Byzantine public life and entertainment. Today, it houses three significant monuments: an obelisk from Egypt made of stone, a serpentine column from Persia crafted in bronze, and a stone column believed to be from Rome. These artifacts, made from materials like Egyptian granite, bronze, and limestone, represent the rich cultural interactions of ancient empires.
One of the highlights of my trip. Loved going into all the towers and finding that little door at the back that sent you into tunnels and stairs , peaking into rooms and finally up to the most magnificent view over the sea , across Istanbul and down on the Golden gate. About two other groups for the entire time we were there. Oh and have a coffee

The Yedikule Dungeons Museum charges an entry fee of 100 Lira for tourists. The museum is comprised of several towers, including one that visitors can ascend to enjoy a panoramic view of Istanbul. While the museum primarily features ruins, the Golden Gate is a standout attraction, offering a magnificent sight. This museum is recommendable for those who appreciate ancient architecture and a sense of nostalgia.
