This is a fairly comprehensive review of the gym and leisure facilities at The Village Hotel, Edinburgh. Having been a member for the requisite year (I have decided to leave) these are my plus and minus points about being a gym and leisure member:
+
Good size gym
Other members fairly friendly
Welcoming atmosphere
Fairly good location
Other businesses inside - Starbucks, restaurant, bar
Initial sign-up easy
Good engagement via circular emails
Customer service decent
Personal trainers and advice readily available
Lockers easy to use
Entry and exit straightforward
Car park easy to use and always has spaces
Fairly stress-free compared to there gyms
–
Dirty - the toilets and changing rooms are often quite dirty (considering the relatively pricey membership fee)
Toilet seats broken and don't stay up!
Locker doors often broken
Shower door hooks often broken
Guest pass system very poor (see below)
Broken equipment - the gym equipment is not maintained adequately considering the price level of the membership fee
They took an extra 2 weeks of money when I left after 12 months (so I paid 12 months + 2 weeks which differed from the contract I signed)
Membership fee raised while I was a member with no noticeable improvements
Swimming pool very small
Hot tub is very small and always full (even off-peak)
My overall feeling was The Village is very quick to take your money, raise fees and make it difficult to leave (3 months notice and took more than 12 month’s fees from me even though I gave over 3 month’s notice).
In general my opinion is that the gym and facilities are not well maintained for the price (£62 /m). For around £80-100 a month there are far more well maintained gyms and spas in Edinburgh that I’ve been a member of.
Ultimately I decided to leave due to the focus on extracting more money from me without an adequate approach to making the facilities acceptable. I would happily pay £30-40 a month (similar to council gym) for this place but not the price they are charging.
Furthermore I was given 6 printed guest passes when I joined which expired within 1 week! I asked for the dates to be changed and they offered me the option of electronic passes that would not expire. However when I took a guest a couple of times they said the passes were deleted and charged my guest. They offered to get the manager to help but I couldn't be bothered so just paid!
In conclusion it is quite a nice place to workout but the gym and leisure facilities are not up to scratch for the amount they charge in my opinion. A manager / boss with more focus on quality rather than taking guest's money would improve the situation and I may have stayed on.
