Dedicated to Loard Shivaperumaan

* Built in 1857, during the British rule of the country by Ponnambalam Mudaliyar, visionary local minor lord. He built a small temple on site. So the Hindus living in Colombo would have a place of worship to call their own.

* The temple was inherited by his son, Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan who was a key figure in Ceylon’s battle for independence from the British regime. This iconic figure is one that is greatly esteemed by all Sri Lankans.

* Entirely made up of south granite stone

* The walls and the pillars have been intricately designed with peacocks, swans and cows

* The temple looks colorful during the important festival Pongal that is often celebrated in the month of January.During this festival the temple is decorated with lights and flowers and is crowded by the people all the rituals are performed with enthusiasm by the devotees and various sevas are also performed like helping the poor and needy giving food to the helpless people.

* People are not allowed to take any pictures while inside the Kovil.

* The temple is open from 5.00 am till 12.00 noon; and then reopens in the evening at 5.00 pm and closes at 8.30 pm.

Sri Kailasanathar Swami Devasthanam, or Kapikaawatha Shivan Temple as it is also called by its devotees, is the oldest Hindu Temple in Colombo. Dedicated to the gods Ganesha and Shiva, the temple has been around for over two centuries. It’s also one of the most beautiful temples in Colombo.

It is with great disappointment that I write this review. The management of this temple appears to be incredibly irresponsible and ignorant. Despite clear instructions and boards placed at both ends, people are removing their slippers in front of the temple, showing a blatant disrespect to the deities and Hindu culture. This lack of seriousness towards upholding traditions and respect is concerning. It reflects poorly on the overall wellbeing of the Hindu community and the sacredness of the temple. I hope you take urgent action to ensure proper reverence is maintained in the temple.

Definitely do check this out if you are a visitor to the city. Undoubtedly an underrated masterpiece in Colombo with fine craftsmanship. The temple is fully carved by stones with fine details .Those corridors are definitely highlighted. I didn't find any difficulties in taking photographs. I was quite amazed by how calm the place was ,not crowded at all. Better to visit in the evenings.

Mooie tempel, maar pas op met de man die je wel even zal rondleiden! Hij heeft een handlanger die bevestigt dat deze man door de tempel is aangesteld. Na afloop komt het verhaal dat de tempel een donatie verwacht. Niet in contanten, maar in melk. Hij stapte botweg bij ons in de tuk tuk om die voor LKR 3.000 te gaan kopen. Ook onze tuk tuk chauffeur wist zich geen raad met die man. Het werd erg onaangenaam en we hebben hem uiteindelijk gewoon uit de tuk tuk gezet.

Впервые в индуистском храме. Впечатлил каменный интерьер, сильный аромат благовоний и интересная церемония. Работает с утра и вечером, с 12:00 до 17:00 закрыт. Обувь надо снимать при входе во двор, а не в храм. Важно: учитывайте,что днём камни двора раскалены как угли. Специально обученная бабушка будет сохранять ваши тапочки, потом надо будет дать ей денежку, сколько не жалко. Мужчинам, которые пришли в шортах на входе можно взять юбку, также за пожертвование.

Place of mental peace and relaxation. A must visit Hindu Temple, carved entirely from granite, the temple is a rare gem in Sri Lanka. The stone creates a unique atmosphere, bathed in the warm glow of oil lamps. As you enter through the wooden doors, the rhythmic chanting and clanging of bells fill your senses.

Intricate carvings adorn the walls and pillars, depicting swans, peacocks, cows, and deities. A towering gopuram, decorative arches, and sculpted walls add to the grandeur. The main shrine is the heart of the temple, surrounded by others where rituals unfold at specific times.

I was staying at a hostel at Vauxhall Street. Each time, I walked from the Colombo Fort Train Station to Slave Island and my hostel, I will pass by this Hindu Temple.

I came from Singapore and there are many similar Hindu temples in Singapore. Whether the presiding God of the temple is Lord Ganesh or Lord Shiva or Lord Murugan or Lord Krishna, the architectural designs of most Hindu temples are uniquely of a standard template, much influenced by the designs from the South India Hindu temples. The outlook of this temple reminds me of Sri Layan Sithi Vinayager Temple, the Lord Ganesh Temple at Keong Siak Road in Singapore.

In Singapore, I don't see the need for temple staff to safe keep the footwear for devotees and in return collect some token of money. Entry to all Hindu Temples in Singapore is free and they are open throughout the day. I was surprised to see the door of this temple locked at few occasions during the day.

While I was amazed at the intricate design of the temple and the strikingly fierce and bold sculptures, I found the paint on some parts of the sculptures was peeling off and not well-maintained. In Singapore, most Hindu temples are well-maintained with regular renovation schedules. The façade of most Hindu temples in Singapore look freshly with brightly colorful paint coated on the sculptures and thus look appealing. Even the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore - the Sri Mariamman Temple (built in 1827) has just undergone another renovation and attracted many tourists to visit it. It was also declared a national monument by the Singapore authorities and thus well taken care of by the government.

This temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Colombo. I am not sure if it is designated a national monument. I understand that the temple was historically built by a group of rich Indian Chetti merchants. It is now 200 years old and should be regularly upgraded and maintained with assistance from the authorities.

Sri Kailasanathar Swami Devasthanam, or Kapikaawatha Shivan Temple as it is also called by its devotees, is the oldest Hindu Temple in Colombo. Dedicated to the gods Ganesha and Shiva, the temple has been around for over two centuries. It’s also one of the most beautiful temples in Colombo.

The temple has been created by skilled temple architects and sculptors straight from India and maintains the classic Hindu temple look that is rarely seen on Sri Lanka.

The colorful main tower with its detailed sculptures, intricate lotus-carved main door, solid stone statue masterpieces, and other such aspects make the temple a beautiful sight for sore eyes. In addition to the main shrine dedicated to God Shiva; a number of shrines to other Hindu Gods and Goddesses encircle the main sanctum.

Included in these satellite shrines are shrines to Ganesh, Skanda, Dhurka, Vairavar, Ambaal, the nine planetary bodies, Kali, Brahma, Sandeswarar, and many others. Visitors have to take off their footwear and wash their feet before entering. They are also not allowed to take photos of the insides of the temple unless proper prior approval is gained.

Однозначно рекомендую! Ми почати свою мандрівку по Шрі-Ланці з відвідування двох індуїських храмів Kathiresan (вони близько один від одного, гугл Вам в поміч). З аеропорту добралися автобусом, речі залишили на залізничному вокзалі у камері схову (вокзал дуже близько від автостанції) і пішли до храмів. Нам дуже сподобалося, це вражає, особливо тому, що раніше у таких храмах не були.

La décoration particulièrement riche de ce temple hindou, situé sur Slave Island mérite véritablement un détour, ses couleurs chatoyantes attirent immanquablement le regard, sans doute l'un des plus attirant que nous ayons pu admirer au cours de notre court séjour à Colombo

Significativo tempio cittadino, interessante e ben tenuto: nei pressi si può vedere anche un elefante purtroppo relegato in cattività in un misero spazio.
Da visitare l'interno con il dovuto rispetto.
