Nice restaurant under the historic townhall of Hamburg, with excellent acoustics great for dinner with many people so you can hear each other without screaming.

The food quality was good. The staff were friendly. Lunchtime prices were moderate. More importantly this is a historical place and you can get that feeling when entering into the building. Directly in the city center and on site of city hall.

I explicitly pointed to the kleine portion of the labskaus on the menu. I wanted to try something new and it was supposed to be a specialty, but I really didn't know what I was going to get, and so I also didn't know that they gave me the big portion anyway. So I paid for 21 euro for what is basically corned beef. Very cunning to trap a clueless tourist like me!

I would have let it go at that but at the end of our meal I wanted to go to the toilet, and they told me there was no toilet. They gave vague directions to go through the city hall and outside, and it turned out to be the public toilet on the plaza. Completely unacceptable! How can this be a restaurant with no toilet, and they direct their customers to the public toilet instead???

If you decide to go here, ask for a table on the edge of the room. We were sat in the middle and it wasn't cosy and the sound was awful.
The food was very German but tasted great. It is the first time that I have ever eaten out, where I don't need to salt my food. The menu card was old and a bit disgusting.
So if you sit on the edge then I would recommend the place.
