The prices are slightly above average, but you definitely get what you pay for—top-notch, artisanal bread with a distinct taste that stands out in Hong Kong’s competitive bakery scene. The setting is cozy, perfect for a light snack on a brisk afternoon, with a range of small pastries that complement their excellent breads.

Levain! Oh how I miss your branch in PMQ, where I used to go weekly for chocolate viennois and sliced sourdough. The Wan Chai location is less convenient to my flat, but often when I’m passing through Wan Chai I make it a point to stop here. The dirty little Hong Kong secret that no one seems to be telling the tourists queuing endlessly up Staunton St or in CWB is that…this is better than Bakehouse, all around. It’s not that I don’t like Bakehouse—there’s plenty of room for great western-style bakeries in HK—but Levain is unpretentious and simply higher quality.

The WC location is a bit cramped, but I like it that way. Most of the business is people walking by for take-out (it seems), but I’ve often brought a book here (or PMQ) for table service. The focaccia makes for excellent sandwiches, too, I must say.

Fairly good pastries, coffee is also quite good, but unfortunately the service speed (given the cafe was only half full) and the attitude of the staff wasn’t great. Still great potential to become a good cafe.

Had a latte to-go, which was very good. I recommend it if you like strong coffee. They have beans options from different South American countries and the service was good and fast.
