Very nice inside the beauty of the art. The plaza fountain outside has steps so you can rest. Its close to all the places in trastevere.

Where to start? This has to have been my favorite church of the 7 pilgrim churches of Rome. It's not difficult to get to as the blue line takes you right there, and the courtyard + interior are amazing. I cannot believe how few visitors it gets as it is as impressive as St. Peter's in my opintoon. I can't adequately express just how striking the interior of the church is..it is massive, and the sculptures, mosaic and portraits are wonderful. You are also able to see the area where St. Paul is buried.. just take an hour or two to spend here and to pray (and go to confession! - available in many languages at many times per day). You won't regret it. A real gem.
A wonderful Haven in the town square. Incredibly opulent and extremely beautiful. We went in May this year and every attraction has army or police stationed outside. I felt very safe and this was incredible experience.
This is one of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome. It is around a 10 minute walk from the Basilica St. Paul Metro Station for those making way from the city centre of Rome.
The basilica is located south of the old Aurelian Wall and was originally constructed in the 4th century upon what is believed to be the location of the burial of the apostle St. Paul. Unfortunately, it was gutted by fire in 1823 so much of what you see today is a rebuild from the early 19th-century.
Quite a few points of interest worth making effort to see. I very much enjoy seeing the courtyard right in front of the basilica. This is where you see the statue of St. Paul flanked by palm trees surrounded by four massive colonnades and the delightful golden mosaic facade.
Within the basilica there are a massive central nave with marble floor and coffered, patterned ceiling. Make sure to see the Pope portraits the line the upper walls, the medieval ciborium & candelabrum situated in the centre nave as well as the delightful apse mosaics behind. These are also worth making time to see while exploring the interior of the basilica.

If you are a Christian, this is a must see sight. The relic of the chains and the Moses statue, plus the icons are very cool and important for faith. Even if you are not Christian, still very interesting to see. The atmosphere of the church is beautiful.

Peaceful, quiet, beautiful and there is Míguelangello sculpture of Moises which -as all of his Art- is Fantastic and very impressive and it is free . There are benches to sit, relax and enjoy the Basilica which I loved!!

Such an incredible Basilica to visit when in Rome! It is only about a 5 minute walk from the Colosseum and inside you will find the famous sculpture of Moses that was created by Michelangelo in the 1500s. It is completely free to enter and worth the visit!
Stumbled upon this beautiful basilica after visiting the Campidoglio and what a find! The steps leading up are a bit of a workout, but the incredible artworks and peaceful ambiance inside are so rewarding. It’s quieter than other churches, which makes it perfect for soaking in the history and spirituality. Don’t miss the ceiling — it’s gorgeous!
Beautiful! You need to walk all around the building to find the open door to let you in. It is free to go into and the outside is outstanding and the inside too, is incredible. Very tall building and it is said that there are six more spots for the upcoming popes and once they are on their last space for the pope, apparently this is said to be when the world is supposed to end.

Personally, the most amazing church in rome (even better than st. peter). The place welcomes all visitors with different religious beliefs.
Maybe my favorite and definitely the most unique church in Rome that I've seen. An easy walk from the Colosseum, this circular church is lightly touristed and located in a quiet charming courtyard . The walls are frescoed with the most delightfully gruesome depictions of martyrdoms in chronological order from the slaughter of innocents to Constantine's conversion. (Make sure you check the opening hours before you go)
Luogo incantevole. L'avevo visitata altre volte ma non avevo visto la parte inferiore con dei lavori artistici veramente interessanti. Si deve dare un offerta a persona di 6 €. Subito all'uscita sulla destra, citofonando, si accede ai locali delle suore che, prendendo l'ascensore, si possono vedere degli affreschi bellissimi di Pietro Cavallini riscoperti dopo la ori di ristrutturazione. Anche qui si entra facendo un offerta di circa 3€ a persona.

A beautiful church at the top of a tall staircase. The hall and ceiling are quite nice to look at, and if you're particularly interested in architecture or looking to worship it'll be a must visit. It's quite a climb up the stairs however, and it will basically be a dead end except for the church itself.

Come here to see the church that Michelangelo designed in the 16th-century out of the 3rd-century Baths of Diocletian ruins. The exterior does look like ancient Roman ruins and once you enter you may be surprised by the scale of the interior which is hidden from the outside.
It is a big church, fairly typical chapels fitted into the old ruins. Nice artworks, sculptures, marble laid walls and floor. Make sure to see the famous Meridien Line and if interested, there is a small exhibition area regarding the history of the the old Baths of Diocletian and how Michelangelo transformed their ruins into the church we see today.

This is an ancient church resigned and redeveloped numerous times over the centuries. Presently what you see resembles its 12th-century exterior and 8th-century interior layout and appearance. The mix match of columns lining the central nave are very interesting. The main altar is nice, the crypt interesting and the bell tower you see outside impressive. However, the most popular thing to see here is the famous Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth), the iconic ancient Roman marble mask sculpture that medieval legend states will bite the hand off of any liar who places their hand in its mouth.

But once you have managed to climb the over 100 steps ( there are a lot more but I don't want to spoil your fun counting them) 😜 you are rewarded with such a great place. Full of art and wonder. You will agree the climb is worth it. Also you get some beautiful views of Rome. There are no lifts or anything easy way round also. The steps are the only way.

The Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità) is a famous ancient Roman marble mask located in the portico of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. Not even kidding, seriously the best 2.5 Euros I've ever spent to visit the archeological lower levels with the crypt. When we stepped into the lower chapel, it literally took our breath away. Please - if you have an opportunity, please go. So worth the trip, and given the nature of things, it's bound to be locked away or become more costly, and for anyone intrigued with Saint Cecilia, the early Christian church in Rome, or (like us as non-Catholics) just love the beauty and intrigue behind the story, go. Go now. Spend some money in the bookstore, light a candle, and DEFINITELY pay the tiny admission to see the lower levels.
It was a very pleasant surprise! I was expecting another normal church and when I entered this one I was surprised by its grandeur and because it was different in terms of configuration, but also because it was different in terms of façade. I highly recommend it!

Simply stunning. The basilica is huge and beautiful, has many saloons and even some masses were being held while I was there. There is no fee to visit, so I suggest you to do a donation or buy something from the store, to help he maintenance of the Basilica. Being catholic or not, I strongly recommend the visit, just a few blocks away from Termini station.
We always enjoy visiting churches no matter where we go. This was another amazing church in this area of the city. There is a security checkpoint, but rather a formality - noting like the St Peter's Bascillica. We visited at night before closing - really added to the experience. There was also a service going on in the chapel off of the main church area. The acoustics were amazing - we were in the main area away from the service, but it was so peaceful to sit there and listen to the sermon and hymns. When you walk in, it is simply a wide open area that likely had seats at one point in time. There is a beautiful area near the front of the church with a sunken area with a statue and relic. I suggest visiting at night for this different experience. Thank you.

Wahnsinnig schöne Basilika, absolute Empfehlung. Soweit ich weiß ist es der höchste Glockenturm in Rom mit 75m Höhe. Am Eingang gibt es Sicherheitskontrollen. Es werden teilweise Messen abgehalten, daher sollte man sich im Vorfeld informieren. Es gibt einige Beichtstühle die mit Priestern in unterschiedlichen Sprachen besetzt sind. Es ist alles sehr beeindruckend! Absolute Empfehlung

Considerata la più importante chiesa del rione Trastevere (e tra le più importanti della capitale) è stata probabilmente il primo luogo ufficiale di culto cristiano edificato a Roma ma sicuramente il primo dedicato al culto della Vergine. La chiesa venne infatti fondata nel III secolo da papa Callisto I (accanto, sulla sinistra della chiesa, il cosiddetto Palazzo di Callisto): secondo le cronache o forse secondo la leggenda nel 38 a.C. proprio in quel luogo la terra avrebbe preso a eruttare olio, evento che fu considerato una miracolosa annunciazione della nascita del Redentore. La basilica fu poi ricostruita quasi completamente durante il pontificato di papa Innocenzo II nel XII secolo (a questa fase risalgono i mosaici in facciata e in abside). Alla fine del ‘500 l’architetto Martino Longhi venne incaricato di aggiungere le cappelle laterali e quella di lato all’abside per il cardinale Marco Sittico Altemps.
Da ammirare all'interno il colonnato imponente (frutto pare di riuso di colonne provenienti da Caracalla). Dominichino e Cavallini sono solo due degli artisti che hanno partecipato al decoro. C'è sempre gente che prega quindi ricordatevene quando la visitate e cercate di avere rispetto per quello che è e resta un luogo di culto. La facciata di notte offre uno spettacolo di arte e suggestione ma questa basilica è ricordata soprattutto per l'accoglienza verso i bisognosi, grazie anche alla collaborazione con l'adiacente comunità di S. Little church to go in and see. Nice architecture internally. Nothing wow from outside. There is a security check before going in but no need for tickets. Worth a quick look if close by but wouldn’t go out of your way for it. Not really into churches but kinda cool looking and it was free!
Absolutely beautiful. Would recommend visiting to anyone. So many beautiful paintings and sculptures in an awe-inspiring building
Built on the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian, much of the work inside is attributed to Michelangelo. It's an unusual church in that it it in the shape of a cross rather than the elongated aisle you find in many others. It's not particularly well known (judging by the few tourists entering) but is absolutely worth viewing. The paintings and sculpture which adorn the church are beautiful. And it's free! Look out for the statue of Galileo in the small garden to one side of the sacristy and the madly impressive pipe organ in the main church.
Sono passato una prima volta alle 6:30 del mattino circa ... e il Rione di Trastevere ancora dormiva, pochi i viandanti al sabato mattina. E' un quartiere bohémien che una volta, affondava le radici nella classe operaia ... oggi, e l'ho capito al mio ritorno, alle 19:30, è luogo di "movida" dove giovani, ma anche meno giovani, si accalcano nelle Vie e nelle Piazze dove sono trattorie tradizionali e birrerie artigianali. Il centro è Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere ... la Piazza dove sorge la Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, il luogo di culto più importante di tutto il Rione. La Basilica, secondo la tradizione, viene fondata da Papa Callisto I nel luogo dove sgorgò dell'olio ma portata a termine, almeno nella versione più antica, da Papa Giulio I. Al suo interno, tra l'altro, le spoglie di San Callisto, fondatore della Basilica. La struttura attuale risale al 1138-1148, al tempo di Innocenzo II che, però, non ebbe modo di veder completata la fabbrica ... morì prima ma non mancò di lasciare i "mezzi" economici per terminare i lavori. Furono qui utilizzati materiali provenienti dalle Terme di Caracalla. In seguito, nel XVI secolo, il Cardinale Marco Sittico Altemps fece costruire, su progetto di Martino Longhi il Vecchio, la Cappella della Madonna della Clemenza. Nel 1702 Papa Clemente XI fece riedificare il Portico e modificare la facciata, affidando i lavori a Carlo Fontana. Ulteriori interventi tra il 1866 e il 1877, al tempo di Papa Pio IX, ad opera dell'Arch. Virginio Vespignani atti al restauro. Nella facciata è conservato un mosaico del XIII secolo in cui Maria allatta il Bambino ed è affiancata da dieci donne recanti lampade. Sul Campanile, in alto, in una nicchia, un mosaico della Madonna con Bambino. Al suo interno, a tre navate su colonne ioniche e corinzie architravate, un soffitto ligneo disegnato dal Domenichino, autore anche della Assunzione al centro. Tra le opere da segnalare: la Cappella di Strada Cupa, con la Madonna di Strada Cupa, di Pierin del Vega, allievo di Raffaello; una Pala di Jacopo Palma il Giovane, Martirio dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo; la Tomba di Innocenzo III, di Virginio Vespignani; la Madonna della Clemenza, forse del VI o VIII secolo. Nel Transetto, in ampie cantorie, sono posti due Organi a Canne. In "cornu Epistulae" trova posto un Organo del 1702, di Filippo Testa. In "cornu Evangelii" un Organo proveniente dalla casa francese Mutin Cavaillé-Coll. Non conosco gli orari di apertura al pubblico ... ho approfittato, alle 19:30 circa, del termine di una funzione religiosa per una breve visita.

A very beautiful church in Rome that holds one of the most beautiful rotunda’s. Located on a hill just adjacent to the baths of Caracalla and Colloseum lies this beautiful church. It’s well worth the visit and the views are quite stunning!
The church can be seen in 10-15 minutes and is free to enter with seating inside. The big reason to go is that it’s one of the oldest churches in Rome and has beautiful mosaics from the late 13th century.
One of my favourite basilicas to visit while in Rome, just a twenty minute ride from the city centre. The basilica is spectacular and breathtaking, it is big and bold and beautiful.
The building has been well taken care of and is free to enter. The monuments and statues outside in the central gardens are gorgeous and picturesque.
It’s well worth the visit if you’re using the Rome metro and definitely a scenic spot to voyage out too!

What a beautiful basilica in Rome and a beautiful church in the city. The basilica stands tall and is located just a small walk away from Cavour station on the Metro B line.

Diese Kirche ist wunderschön! Der Einlass ging an einem Samstagvormittag sehr schnell. Die Taschenkontrolle verlief ohne Probleme. In der Kirche angekommen, hat man erstmal einen "Wow"-Moment. Sie ist wunderschön und sehr filigran. Es gibt sehr viele Beichtstühle, in denen man auf sehr vielen Sprachen seine Beichte ablegen kann. Sehr empfehlenswert.

This is one of the nicest Basilica’s in Rome, it’s stunning. The architecture is gorgeous, the artwork, stone work and museum is beautiful. It’s fairly large with lots to see and do. The artwork, statues, artifacts and religious clothing is very well preserved and displayed. Its collection is impressive, the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend checking out the Basilica Saint Mary of The Angels, it’s a great place for families and children of all ages.
We stopped to see the famous "Mouth of Truth". There was a line, you donate a few Euros and they'll take your pictures. It's worth it if you're a classic movie fan. The church is small but worth a quick look. It's a cute destination on an afternoon walk.
A ton of history in this location with ties to Michaelangelo architecture. Make sure to view the meridian line that is set on the floor, a still functional sundial.
Absolutely gorgeous. Gold adorns nearly every surface. Beautiful paintings both small and huge. The stain glass window is exquisite. The tiny Chapels off the sides are gorgeous. All the little details as you look around get more and more intricate and obvious the more you look. Beautiful
If you can muster up the courage to climb the never ending stairs you will come across this amazing Basilica. The artwork rivals the Vatican. The details are incredible and filled with an abundance of colours, mosaics, paintings and Muriel's. Be careful to avoid the tombs on the floor of the Basilica as a local mentioned we shouldn't set foot on them despite being in the doorway and other parts.
Basilica San Paolo is my favorite basilica. It's impressively large, with a beautiful inner courtyard adorned with palm trees. The limited tourist crowds add to its allure, showcasing its incredible beauty. The presence of a bar on the premises is a convenient touch.
The basilica is wonderful and has a very beautiful statute inside this church. Michelangelo is one of the greatest artists of all time and the statue of Moses is world renowned, it is definitely worth seeing. It’s a very impressive piece of art, the sculpture is quite big, much more impressive than I imaged. I enjoyed the time I spent here, it’s definitely a very unique church that houses this fantastic piece of art. The church interior is also very impressive and lots of beautiful works of art and sculptures to see. I would definitely recommend visiting this Church.

It is unnoticed compared to some tourist traps in Rome. Some of those tourist traps aren’t even worth our time compared to the beautiful basilicas like this one.

Beeindruckende Kirche unweit des Hauptbahnhofs. Sehr sehenswert vom Marmor-Mosaik-Boden bis hin zur golden Decke über die Malereien und Reliquien… alles sehr sehr sehenswert!

Unterhalb des Papst-Altars befinden sich die Reste einer Krippe die Teile der Krippe von Bethlehem sein sollen.
Papst besucht immer wieder diese Kirche vor Auslandsreisen !
