We always make sure to stop by anytime we’re in the city. Great rotating exhibits and permanent exhibit as well as a massive gift shop.
Its price and I recommend obtaining the city pass card in advance. Overall it’s a nice museum with lots of exhibits. I like contemporary art of the 20th century but the way how the modern art is presented did not appeal to me.
It’s a big enough museum. I personally spent 3 hours walking around and exploring. I recommend going if you are into realism as most paintings were in this style. The museum also contains a few rooms of paintings dedicated to Cubism.
The only minus is the unpleasant smell rotating around the museum.
Note this is in regards to the shop only.

We went a while ago and I spent quite a bit on some exciting looking bulbs. Planted at my house and my parents.
One set of bulbs planted at both locations just did not do anything, never to be seen again.
The second set are now flowering.

Not sure I would buy bulbs from here again ** BUT they have been very quick to respond on here to the review to help out which shows excellent customer service so this review may change.
Two stars for the shop looking lovely and an additional for my flowering gladioli.

Had a great time here with my boyfriend. Unfortunately the aquarium was under renovation so we will have to come back. The animals have a lot of space and somewhere they can go to escape to public. Very clean toilets. It's cheaper to buy tickets online.
We went to this place today (part of the university of Leiden) only to be told that it doesn’t exist anymore. The staff said they told Google several times already but somehow it’s still here and listed as open. What you will find instead is the Hortus Botanicus.
Beautiful gift shop. Didn’t do tour but the gift shop was well worth it. Get a tote bag for €3.
Best natural history museum I have ever visited!

This museum has 9 floors with tons of different exhibits such as life, ice age, dinosaurs, death, evolution, etc. Each exhibit was so well put together and had a different theme so that the atmosphere of all the exhibits felt unique to their topic.

There are fun activities for children as well as plenty of information to learn for adults. I felt so inspired after visiting and learned a lot about the diversity of life on Earth.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. There was a large cloakroom where you could store bags and even suitcases, clean restrooms, a lovely gift shop, and a delicious cafeteria with several vegetarian options.

There is also a “LiveScience” area on the ground floor where you can see scientists working on their own projects and ask them questions!

I highly recommend visiting the Naturalis if you are ever in Leiden. It is definitely worth it.

Great day. Had wheelchairs to use at the entrance. It was like a shopping trolley system, pop a €2 coin in, disconnect & get it coin back when you put it back. You couldn't pay with cash for a map only pay by card. Nowhere to tell you what time animals were due to be fed 🙄 But in all the zoo & animals was a great day out.

BEST ZOO I'VE BEEN TO. Unfortunatley it was torrential rain all day but still really enjoyed ourselves. The zoo was massive so very hard to find all the different animals, I kept going in circles!! Animals seemed fairly happy and well kept. We saw a wonderful sea lion show at 11am which was so fun to watch. Highly recommend this zoo! There were lots of school trips but the place was so big it didn't matter.

One of the best zoos visited, the animals all seemed to have decently sized enclosures for the type of animal with a lot of enrichment. The elephant enclosure was not huge but the elephants themselves seemed very happy as they were playing in the water, which was so deep - you could not see the elephant when they dove down! You can get really close to them in the water too with a small winding path that goes through part of the enclosure. The butterfly enclosure did not have a large number of butterflies compared to others but this could be the time of year or weather (mid June). There are a wide range of plants all through the park and all had new leaves, showing they are well tended to. Regarding being an only English speaker - the park offers English maps at a small fee, which we found very handy. The signs were symbols of animals which was accessible to understanding where to go. However, there is a lot of walking within the zoo as it is a massive place but they offer wheelchair assistance if required, which was also very accessible in nature. The staff were very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about their work - pointing out where different animals were to us to make sure we got the full ARTIS experience! Overall, the quality of the zoo was very high and the animals did seem to be happy - which is the most important thing when visiting a zoo! Would advise coming here for a visit, definitely an amazing place to see if you love animals.
This is so worth a visit - we learned much more than we expected about tulips! The history is pretty fascinating, and gosh the museum has presented it well. Their use of the small space is brilliant and boggles the mind. Takes about 30 minutes to go through but people including us were spending longer than that, savouring details. You can even learn about the tulip bulb trade which still exists today.

A real variety of information presentation methods are used. The staff were pretty humble about how good it is. They are lovely. A memorable and delightful museum, pretty much the best €5 I could spend in Amsterdam.
We visited the Naturalis Biodiversity Center on a rainy day with our kids, and it was an absolute delight! The museum’s new building is a masterpiece of design, blending oak-colored wood, marble, and white concrete patterns. As we explored the galleries, we marveled at the diversity of life—from undersea creatures to majestic elephants and everything in between. What sets Naturalis apart is how they mix animals together, creating a friendly and accessible atmosphere. Our kids loved touching the taxidermy animals and playing interactive games in the Seduction gallery. T.rex Trix in the Dinosaur Era gallery was a highlight! 🦖

The museum’s commitment to education and enthusiasm for natural sciences shines through. If you’re in Leiden, don’t miss this treasure trove of nature’s wonders. 🌎🔍

Hope you like it!

Parking for 7,5 EUR/day in front of the museum
One of the finest museums in the Netherlands located in the heart of Leiden. Exhibits include Old Masters including the earliest known work of Rembrandt, to contemporary arts. Highly recommended!
I enjoyed seeing the tulips, they were so beautiful! The gift shop had some very nice items for sale too.

I'd say the best zoo I've been. Really, what a lovely experience I had. Ive never thought about getting into a zoo in Amsterdam, Lucky my mom asked me to book and there was lovely. Great variety of different animals. Some of them aren't in cages. The day we were there wasn't that earn but the animals were cool and active.
Beautiful exhibits and artifacts, very rich, diverse, and well maintained, and collected from different cultures all over the world. A must-go for both locals as well as tourists and internationals.
It's a nice science history museum with expositions made around the rule of cool. A good combo of edutainment.

Lovely zoo, much bigger than anticipated - one can easily spend the day here. Beautiful park, though-through layout, mostly good sized enclosures. Plenty of staff who are happy to provide insights. Various food options and playgrounds make it a family friendly place to visit.
A small museum with a history of textile home industry in Leiden. The house looks so old and far from fancy compared to Rapenburg houses. I met a very kind volunteer who was happy to show me around.
Came here on holiday with my wife had a great time. So many great pieces underneath one room great prices at the gift shop .
They don’t allow you to carry bags over a certain size inside the museum they do provide a free Locker for your things and a small paper bag for your phone and wallet . From what I see multiple lifts for handicap people .
A little cute museum with lovely flower motive souvenirs. I would recommend to buy a ticket for museum if you like to know more about tulips💛They sell flower bulbs, when you buy them staff will explain when to plant depending on the country where you live💛
Located at Rapenburg in the heart of historic Leiden, the very first city in the Netherlands to have a university of world standing. This academic museum, part of the University of Leiden, gives us an impression of the glorious days of academic life of the bygone days. Do come and visit when you are in Leiden
Update 28/5/22 Museum Night Leiden. This museum of ethnology, located within walking distance from the Leiden central station, is so breathtaking that one finds it rather difficult to choose where to start! My advice is: take your time and walk through all the exhibits....and read the fascinating stories behind them. Come to Leiden and visit this magnificent museum! Highly recommended!!
I bought these tulip bulbs last September from your shop, planted them in October and I’m so pleased with how they have bloomed. Wish I had bought more. However, I don’t have the packaging any longer and wanted to know the names of the tulips. Do I cut the stalks back once they have flowered?
Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art and Designs is absolutely riveting and definitely a must-visit. Tourists may skip this museum as there are two museums in this Museum Square (Museumplein): Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. I do recommend that you spend a couple of hours here. You won't regret it as these photos would testify. They have special exhibitions on a regular basis. Give yourself a visual treat. Highly recommended!!

Great mix of styles and modern and contemporary art pieces. Big museum and great collection of souvenirs on the gift shop. Recommend. However is pricey. It’s only worth it if you truly have the box of the mind set open.

This zoo really surprised me in a good way!
The enclosures are a very good size, some of them are massive! They all have different areas for animals to play in. There’s plenty of enrichment and plants in the enclosures as well as lots of hiding spots for the animals. With all the plants and trees the zoo looks beautiful and as far as we could tell they’re still doing work to it and improving/expanding.
Animals seem happy and very well cared for, we got to see one of the baby elephants getting his pedicure done. Overall a great experience!
Greatly Recommended for Those Science Lovers!

If you are not a big fan of Sciences, it might be a little hard to appreciate but its nevertheless very fun and super enjoyable with all the hands on activities you can do.

I must say the theater is truly the best one I have seen in a museum.
Very nice museum! Kids can learn a lot (and adults too) the first bit is a bit busy, because it’s a one way narrow passage through. After that it’s more free roaming in the different expositions. Awesome to see Trixie in real life. Try to get in early, so there is enough parking. Enjoy!
Impressive upper floor of Leiden history! Excellent to get the content of the city, its background and the historic background. Amazing to see so much work of Rembrandt at one place!!
This museum has a very nice collection and it is presented in a very fine way. I do have one remark. One can visit the museum with a wheelchair or pram but a frequent use of open wheelchair lifts is necessary to see the whole museum. This is due to the unique location and organisation of the building.
Nice museum café. Friendly staff. Thanks for the nice visit!
Excellent science museum done in a very visual and storytelling way. From the theatre at the beginning to the kids ground floor at the end it was all very interesting. I liked Boerhaave better than Memo in Amsterdam because Boerhaave is better structured and a bit more academic and not thrill seeking. Great museum to visit with kids.
My favourite museums in Amsterdam after Anne Frank. The exhibits are moving and gets you engaged. The the audio guide was nice. Toilets are clean but all gender neutral so it was a surprise. The lockers mechanism is confusing, that’s the only bad thing in the museum.
This museum, beginning shortly, will add an extra admission fee, including for Museumkaart holders, and for certain expositions. This might be an added barrier to visit this museum. So, is this worth a visit?

The stedelijk museum takes you on a tour of artistic expression from the Netherlands from 1900 till now. Mixed in, are temporarily art exhibitions.

The art is varied and there is always something for anyone that catches the eye.

I particularly loved the Martin Wong exposition and the information about his life. I particularly liked his deaf hand gesture paintings that became his signature in his art.

The rooms are big and bright although seating is limited for those who are less mobile
Fabulous museum full of surprises and hidden gems. Really enjoyed it
Very interesting museum that provides a journey through different cultures of the world having list of unique items on show. My favorite section what’s Africa, very colourful and bright.
Amazing experience! Very recommended!
Museum De Lakenhal is the city museum of fine art and history in Leiden, Netherlands. One highlight is its collection of fijnschilder paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.

Sehr cool gemacht
