Great museum. Extensive military history collection. Military history lovers can easily spend a full day here.
The building is gorgeous and as a plus gives you access to the Tomb of Napoleon (and Josephine). But the War Museum may not suit all - especially not children
An incredible war museum. It tells the story of France's constant battles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. If you like knights, their armour and weaponry, you will not be disappointed. I have never seen so many suits of armour in one place. In the more recent galleries, film snippets, maps and sound are used to good effect.
Booking online, in advance in Paris is highly recommended, especially during holiday periods. It saved a lot of time. No queues on the day. Very well organised visiting facilities and route. Also, very good value for the vast array of information, artefacts and audioguides in multiple languages.
The only thing that surprised me was the lack of a room telling the story of the war veteran invalides who were cared for there. Perhaps I missed it and it exists. This is the reason for four and not five stars.

A stunning museum! Mostly famous for being the location of Napoleon’s tomb however the museum has so much more to offer! It is a very large museum which covers almost the entire history of France. We’ve enjoyed this museum greatly and I can confidently say that we’ve seen a small fraction of it although we’ve spent almost 3 hours. The downside is that toilets are very poorly marked, the staff speaks very poor English to give directions and the large complex can give the impression that you are in a maze.
Loved this place! Definitely make time to visit if you enjoy military history. We spent 5 hours here and could have spent another five easily.
Amazing. A must see for history nerds. Buy your tickets in advance on their website, under 26s get discounted tickets so long as there is ID to hand to prove theyre an EU Citizen. You could easily spend the entire day here.
I got the tickets before hand but being an EU citizen under 26 meant I got in for free.
I spent around 7 hours inside, looking at every single thing they had exposed and they have so much.
They have a bit of Roman artifacts and Chinese and Japanese stuff that came as gifts from ambassadors of the past, but it mainly focuses on an incredibly big collection from the 1200s onwards.
They have a lot of medieval armor and weaponry and the entire tour really shows the evolution of both the armor, the weapons and the roles and tactics of war, taking you to a trip through time from knights in shining armor to occupied France.
I highly recommend to check this place out if you like history, there's so much to look and read you are bound to find something interesting.
