Big and well maintained. A few lights would make it look very nice during the night.
NOT FREE

Now that I have your attention, take a look at the photos. If you are a woman and uncovered or a man with shorts above the knees, try to bring a covering (helps if you had bought one somewhere else). There is a charge for renting them.

There is a fee. In my humble opinion, 4 stars because it's still cool but I don't think it was worth 20 euros to see frescos crumbling/scraped from the walls. I decided myself that I still wanted to go anyways.

Kudos if you can find a tour that combines it.
Beautiful Byzantine frescoes in fairly good condition. The building was recently renovated and it is definitely worth the trip there. It is a bit out of the way, but still easy to find. It is not that big, but the artwork is really impressive.

A location that really helps to appreciate that this city has been a world power for 17 centuries. The golden gate itself is relatively well preserved, given its age, and monumental in scale showing the grandeur of the Roman city so long ago. You can see how it was modified and repaired by later empires and then walk up to get great views over the modern metropolis. The fort in general is clearly in the middle of extensive, but delayed, repairs which removes a star. Once complete, I'd say this site should be one of the more vital to see, definitely more important than some disneyfied cistern. Getting here is pretty easy, we took a bus around the outside of the city (great chance to see some of the sea walls) and then walked along the road 10 minutes past some great bits of wall to get here. You can also get a bus direct to the entrance in the east. We then walked north to the Belgrade gate past a mixture of walls in various states of repair, again helping to appreciate the passage of time. It's a little out the way, but well worth the trip and as a bonus you can pick up some much better value baklava before heading back to the tourist area.
Interested in something related to history- this is one of the places to go to. The fees was average considering other spots of importance, but it did not have any thing special or extra-ordinary. The staff should at least show the historical aspect of the place. If you are on a budget, you can avoid this place and choose binberderik cistern which is cheaper but only accepts card.
Sultanahmet Square, also known as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, is located next to the Blue Mosque. This historic oval-shaped site is a great spot to relax, with benches and notable attractions like the Serpent Column, Obelisk of Theodosius, and Walled Obelisk, each with informative history boards. We paused here before visiting the Blue Mosque, and it’s worth researching beforehand if you enjoy historical sites. Despite occasional crowds, most visitors move on quickly, giving you time to explore at your own pace.

Once a church, now a mosque a beautiful and peaceful place with extraordinary mosaics.
One should either know the Bible and verses well or have someone who does to understand the mosaics better.
I was so looking forward to seeing this mosque but was sadden that it is now charged for. It was free and now 20 euros.

That said, it is beautiful, and the artistry is inspiring. Think it would be worth it for half the price to aid up keep and maintain the heritage.
The cistern was built by Roman Emperor Theodosius II (r. 402–450) between 428 and 443 to store water supplied by the Valens Aqueduct. In 2010, the cistern was rediscovered under the building when Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality demolished the annex building. The 360-degree projection system integrated in the cistern’s interior offers the visitors an extraordinary visual and sound experience.
It a beautiful old church.. now converted it into mosque. But inside it have a beautiful and amazing spiritual mosaic arts. Worth to visit. And it have entrance fee 20€ per person.

The Theodosius Cistern is a hidden gem in Istanbul, offering a unique blend of ancient history and modern technology. While the cistern itself is a marvel of Byzantine engineering, what truly sets this site apart is the stunning video mapping experience inside.

As you step into the cool, dimly lit space, you are immediately transported back in time. The video mapping show is a captivating journey through the rich history of Istanbul, with vivid projections that bring the ancient walls to life. The show is expertly crafted, blending artistic visuals with historical storytelling in a way that is both educational and mesmerizing.

A special highlight is the segment dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic. This portion of the show is a powerful tribute, celebrating the spirit of modern Turkey while respecting its deep historical roots. The combination of music, light, and imagery creates an emotional and immersive experience that resonates deeply with visitors.

Overall, the Theodosius Cistern offers an unforgettable experience that beautifully marries the past and the present. The video mapping adds a dynamic layer to the visit, making it not just a historical site, but a living, breathing part of Istanbul’s cultural heritage. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in history, art, or simply looking for a unique experience in Istanbul.
Important historical place of city tour of Istanbul. If you are interested in history then it will take some time to be here otherwise it should not take more than 10 minutes to click few nice pics here. We had a local guide with us who was very helpful in understanding of historical aspects of this place.

Its now a mosque but many of the original Orthodox Byzantine mosaics remain in good shape so worth a see. Also funny how the women's prayer section is a dark brick wall room while the mens is in the former altar with large marble, but that's Muslim sexism for you.
Wonderful historical mosque converted from an ancient church. Recently opened for the public for prayer and for viewing the wonderful preserved wall and ceiling mosaiques.
This place is a very cool place, its a hidden gem of istanbul so when i entered there wasnt a big crowd like in hagia sophia for example, the art here was well preserved and even more impressive then other frescoes or mosaics ive seen in turkiye, its small and took me around 5 minutes or so to walk around the whole place but it was still very enjoyable, theres also a little area to pray in but only muslims are allowed to enter. I definitely recommend visiting this place if you want to see byzantine frescoes and mosaics that are so well preserved
Beautiful maintained fortress from the Ottoman period. Part of the Walls of Constantinople. Train (T6) from Yenikapi to Kalicesme. Brief walk through a neighbourhood with small narrow streets leading to on of the corner towers of the fort. It seems there is a lot of renovation / maintenance on the structure. You can walk stairs to top of south tower to enjoy a beautiful view of the Marmara sea. Well worth the effort.
The food is prepared with care. The service amazing. If you are looking for a true Istanbul experience don't look further. The owner is really a very kind man. He was like a lost friend we met again. Go and eat here. No wonder he gets 5-star reviews.
Beautiful little light show filled with Erdogan. Overpriced for such a little show with no history to read. 650 lira for entrance.
The entrance is free for now, but i think they will probably impose an entrance fee in the future.
The gate is open on time at 9 a.m. and the entrance is the side of the mosque. The guards were friendly, but they had limited English proficiency.
The mosque is small. The painting inside is magnificent, and you can take time to appreciate every detail freely. No flash is allowed, though.
The main hall for the mosque is limited to prayers only.
Keep in mind that they close for long during Friday prayer.
It was worth the time to come and see this one too. Smaller cistern, but it was less busy.
The presentation was fun to watch. Wish it would show more history.
This is a very beautiful and interesting mosque. It used to be a church before it was converted into a mosque. The mosaic pictures are amazing and they are well renovated and restored. Part of the mosque is a museum where people can enter and take photos. There is also another part of the mosque dedicated for prayer. Entrance is free.

Built between the third and fourth hills of the ancient city, it was used to bring water to the monumental fountain (ninfeum) from the Belgrade forest. It was promoted by Emperor Valens, who completed the work during his reign, although the security of the aqueduct was soon to be reinforced due to the battle of Adrianople in 378, where the Goth Fritigerno and his army took the life of the Roman emperor.
It is a very impressive viaduct to be there you can imagine everything that was going on at that time it is perfect to go and see there is a very nice park to spend time in.

Quite spectacular to see this historical piece of architecture still standing and being used in moden day times. We walked here and watched the cars driving through when once this engineering masterpiece was responsible for delivering water to the city.

In April the entrance fee was 200 TL. Part of the fortress was under restoration. I came here early on Sunday morning when there were hardly any people in the museum. It took me 1 hour to leisurely walk around all the objects.
At the entrance I was given a folding map with the history of the fortress and I set off to explore it. I liked the view from the top and the location near The Golden Gate. The other objects aren't of much interest.
I think you should come here if you've already seen all the main attractions in Istanbul.

It amazes me that people in ancient times were able to build such an impressive structure with primitive tools.
It's great that historical heritage and modern infrastructure have been brought together. A road runs through the aqueduct and there are 2 small parks nearby.

The Aqueduct of Valens is an impressive ancient structure in Istanbul, originally constructed to supply water to the city from the Belgrade Forest. Its robust architecture, consisting of stone arches and pillars, showcases Roman engineering prowess. Today, parts of the aqueduct still stand as a testament to Istanbul's rich history and architectural heritage. Visitors can admire its grandeur and learn about its importance in providing water to the ancient city.

Absolutely worth coming here to see the mosaics and painted ceilings. It’s another church that has been “turned into” a mosque and so it Seems to be closed around midday for prayers, but as of early June 2024 is not charging admission to enter.

### Review for the Aqueduct of Valens

**Name:** The Aqueduct of Valens (Bozdoğan Kemeri)

**Location:** Istanbul, Turkey

**Rating:** ★★★★☆

**Review:**

The Aqueduct of Valens, also known as Bozdoğan Kemeri, is one of Istanbul's most impressive and historically significant landmarks. Constructed in the late 4th century during the reign of Roman Emperor Valens, this ancient aqueduct stands as a testament to the engineering prowess of the Roman Empire.

Stretching across the city, the aqueduct is an imposing structure, with its grand arches and formidable stone construction. It originally played a crucial role in supplying water to Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Today, it remains a prominent feature of Istanbul's landscape, seamlessly blending with the modern urban environment.

One of the most striking aspects of the Aqueduct of Valens is its sheer scale and the remarkable preservation of its arches. Walking along its length, visitors can marvel at the ingenuity and durability of ancient Roman engineering. The aqueduct is particularly impressive when viewed from Atatürk Boulevard, where it spans the busy road, providing a dramatic contrast between ancient history and contemporary life.

The area around the aqueduct is a vibrant part of Istanbul, with numerous cafes, shops, and historical sites nearby. This makes it an excellent spot for a leisurely stroll, allowing visitors to soak in the ambiance of the city while appreciating the historical significance of the aqueduct. The nearby Fatih district, rich in Ottoman and Byzantine history, offers additional attractions for history enthusiasts.

However, it's important to note that there is limited information available on-site about the history and construction of the aqueduct. Visitors might benefit from doing some research beforehand or joining a guided tour to fully appreciate its historical context and importance.

**Pros:**
- Impressive example of Roman engineering
- Well-preserved structure
- Located in a vibrant area with easy access to other attractions
- Offers a unique blend of ancient and modern Istanbul

**Cons:**
- Limited on-site historical information
- Can be busy due to its urban location

**Overall:**
The Aqueduct of Valens is a must-see for history buffs and those interested in ancient engineering. Its imposing presence and historical significance provide a fascinating glimpse into Istanbul's rich past. Whether you're exploring the city on foot or simply passing by, the aqueduct is a striking reminder of the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire.
Absolut sehenswert!
Very interesting sight worth a visit. You can pretty freely walk around the ruins of this historical fortress. The Golden Gate is here and you are able to climb the stone staircase to the top of the fortress where you get an elevated view of Istanbul. There are two corner towers that you can walk in: one of which was a prison. There are very few visitors and it would actually be a nice place to bring a picnic lunch due to the large grassy area and picnic tables. Currently the mosque in the middle of the fortress is under construction.
The exact location on google is wrong!!! The gate where Google takes you is locked and you need to go around the walls to find official entrance. Ask the locals! The price is 200 lira for adult and free for kids under 8. The fortress is still being renovated and you can take a walk around the towers, don't expect to see any relics or museum, as there's none. However, the fortress itself is well-kept and worth the time.

A wonderful historic area where you can find beautiful buildings, mosques landmarks and monuments.
Harika yerde kurulmuş bir çeşme, yapandan Allah razı olsun 🙏
The Sphendone remains stand out as one of the few Roman artifacts preserved in modern-day Istanbul. This remarkable landmark holds significant historical importance, situated in front of the Blue Mosque's entrance in a bustling, vibrant spot. It's truly a shame that the authorities aren't giving it the preservation it deserves.

Quite small, and probably a little expensive for what it is.

However I really enjoyed the light effects on the columns. Great for taking photos. There is also a gap between the light shows so you can see the columns without any projections.

Visited in the late afternoon, no queues and not very busy inside.

Probably the most underrated attraction in Istanbul. If you come in the morning there are few people here, and you're one on one with the walls and towers, including the Golden Gate that have seen many victorious East Roman emperors coming through them in triumph.

You can climb up one of the Msrble towers for different views on the walls or Marmara sea. When up there you can see the place where the statue of the Great chariot dragged by elephants was standing.

The site is still under construction, but the most interesting parts of it are open. And the price of admission for foreigners is just 100 liras.
Visited the historic Hippodrome of Constantinople, an impressive site steeped in history. Originally used for horse racing and gladiatorial contests, the Hippodrome was the heart of Byzantine public life and entertainment. Today, it houses three significant monuments: an obelisk from Egypt made of stone, a serpentine column from Persia crafted in bronze, and a stone column believed to be from Rome. These artifacts, made from materials like Egyptian granite, bronze, and limestone, represent the rich cultural interactions of ancient empires.
Come early in the morning, ideally when it's opening. The light show is nice. The atmosphere is something you should experience. There aren't as many tourists as in the other cistern.
One of the highlights of my trip. Loved going into all the towers and finding that little door at the back that sent you into tunnels and stairs , peaking into rooms and finally up to the most magnificent view over the sea , across Istanbul and down on the Golden gate. About two other groups for the entire time we were there. Oh and have a coffee
Opposite the entrance- such an eclectic place and owner is lovely.
This was always near the top of my ‘Want to go’ list when in Istanbul and it did not disappoint. A wonderful monument to the engineering prowess of the Roman Empire.

You’ll see lots of marble columns and their left over capitals lying around in local parks and even kids’ playgrounds.

If you are interested in ancient history and especially the engineering side of it then add it to your list.

It’s all free and access is all around the base. No interior access.

Lower arches have some cool looking tea shops I’d recommend to stop and take in the grandeur.

Short walk from the T1 Tram station (less than 15 minutes)

A VERY local market just through the central walking arch. Please be respectful when you’re taking pictures here.

If you want to discover the heritage of Byzantine hey sweets history and culture. This is the best place for you. Similar is built in room which again proves that the great Roman empire existed here before the Ottoman.

The Yedikule Dungeons Museum charges an entry fee of 100 Lira for tourists. The museum is comprised of several towers, including one that visitors can ascend to enjoy a panoramic view of Istanbul. While the museum primarily features ruins, the Golden Gate is a standout attraction, offering a magnificent sight. This museum is recommendable for those who appreciate ancient architecture and a sense of nostalgia.
The café on the top floor turned out to be much more interesting than the attraction in the basement. I understand that I am a tourist, but the price is too high for a show that lasts only 5 minutes. Moreover, it is worth noting that it is just a projection with music.
From a historical point of view, it is indeed interesting and intriguing. However, I did not see any audio guide or simple brochure in English.
The projection show itself is not bad, but I have seen much better ones, and, more importantly, they did not require payment.
If you are a tourist and money is not a problem for you, and you are very bored, you can go, but if you are saving every lira, it is better to avoid it.

A historical water fountain that has been renovated. It was not operational when I visited it.
